Forum rules
The title of this forum has somewhat of a dual meaning - with regard to a 'general' versus 'specific' perspective. Generally speaking, History and Tradition have been the contributors of the distinctives of Baptist faith and practice. The topics in this forum should be about those specific things that have been contributors of the distinctives of Baptist faith and practice - based on History and Tradition. In other words, History and Tradition is the "category" and contributors of the distinctives of Baptist faith and practice is the "theme"... If the nature of the topic does not match this "category" and "theme", then it should not be placed in this forum.

I knew some old-timers who said the preachers did not use notes back when they remembered in the early 1900s. Of course, it could be that in some cases they used them and folks just didn't know it. I would guess that it became popular among the Missionary Baptists in Texas in the 1930s or so. I know a couple of preachers in our area who started preaching in that period that used notes. I know because some of their notes were published in print form. One lived 1891-1974 and the other 1901-1972. When I say notes in these cases, they are quite sparse compared to the outlines many use today. Their notes might only be a few sentences -- main points they wanted to get across. One might wonder whether they even looked at these in the pulpit.

But I recall reading some about the early American and English Regular Baptists that would imply that they may have even used manuscripts at times. So it probably has varied at different times in history.

Someone pulled the rug out from under me. I did not start this thread, but was responding to something asked by someone else. Where'd it go? Nobody know! :?:
