John MacArthur: For What It's Worth

Postby Jeff Haney on 2009 Mar 13 Fri 7:32 am

Just for information purposes, John MacArthur is not a five point Calvinist. I am not advocating all of his teachings, I am simply trying to share correct information about him as he is brought up fairly often on this forum.

He has a T, U, I, and P in his Tulip but no L. - He does not believe or preach a "limited atonement."

In his message Appropriating the Bread of Life, Sept 13th, 1970, (a copy can be found at gty.org/resources/sermons/1514a), in his exposition of John 6:51-59 he stated, "I believe in an unlimited atonement. I believe 1 John 2:2 says He's not only the propitiation for our sins, or the covering, or the Mercy Seat for our sins, but the sins of the whole world. He died for the world, all types, classes, strata, intellects, cultures, the whole world. Listen, this living bread, this one whose flesh was sacrificed on the cross is so full of salvation that all the world may come and eat and live forever. And so Jesus makes the pronouncement, "I am living bread, eat and live forever, and the bread I give is My flesh which I will give for the life of the world." The world can't have life unless He takes our place in death."

Do what you will with this info, but that's it for what it's worth.

so he does believe in "unconditional election" that people are mysteriously elected for damnation or heaven
and he believes in "irresistable grace"?

Brother Haney, thanks for the information about MacArthur. If he is a "4-pointer", his position would probably compare to that of Andrew Fuller, William Carey and other English Baptists who started the foreign mission movement. I think the tulip without the "L" is what's called "sufficient for all, efficient for the elect", though that may be fairly represent MacArthur's position. I don't know enough about him. Seems I remember from Seven Dispensations that J. R. Graves held a position something like that.
