Licensing Service

Postby cbut1 on 2009 Feb 27 Fri 12:17 pm

Hello all

I just thought I would share with ya'll some good news. On March 28th of 2009 the Grace Tulare Missionary Baptist Church is going to decide to license me as a Preacher. How they have done this in the past (so I am told) is they kinda hold something similar to an Ordination service. It is all internal where the Pastor asks some foundational questions and then opens it up to the assembly members to ask what they feel is needed. Once that is all done they go forward from there, (it is kinda like a training run for an ordination service) and vote on it. So keep this all in prayer please. :)

I have never heard of a licensing service. A license is just a statement by the church that a young preacher is acceptable. I suppose it fits in the category of a baby dedication - completely voluntary, unnecessary, with no scriptural support whatsoever. But, if a church wants to do it, I won't argue with them about it.

I have never heard of anyone doing it either and this is only the second time they are doing it. It serves 2 purposes according to my Pastor; 1. To give opportunity for the assembly to learn how to hold a presbetry and ask questions in such a format. 2. To give the person being licensed the opportunity to experience the presbetry format.

We place no special honor on the service other than as an opportunity to teach members how to handle such events as calling a Pastor and Ordinations.

Like Bro. Whiteley, I haven't heard of a licensing service. In my experience this has merely been a vote of the church to recommend a new preacher to sister churches. In some cases they have done it immediately or shortly after the person announces his call. In other cases they have required the person to preach before the church several times before recommending them to others. I've never known of any paperwork -- license -- to be involved, though I'm sure some churches probably do it that way.

Anyway, may God's blessing be upon your calling and ministry.

Yes every other time I have seen an assembly license a preacher it is done simply by a vote usually shortly after they annouce their call to the ministry.

I thought that is what would be done in my case also but my Pastor has chosen to take the opportunity to try and teach the membership some basics of holding ordination services during this time. I actually think it is a good idea to use it as a teachable moment. Isn't one of the things that many Pastors bemoan a little is the fact that the membership doesn't understand certain practices in our work and since ordinations aren't very common or often, it is a good time to get some basic understanding out to the membership.

Trying to think outside of the box to increase the memberships knowledge and understanding of things, this is one I like.
