Possessive vs. contractions

Postby J. L. Looney III on 2009 Mar 08 Sun 4:42 am

Brethren,

I have many faults. I may make several errors in this post.
In writing privately or publicly I make errors in my spelling and grammar.
I seriously doubt that God will make adjustments in the time of judgment concerning our usage of these words.

However, Brethren, men speaking and writing in the name of God ought to know the difference between "your" and "you're."

"Your" is possessive and should not be used in place of "you're", which is a contraction of "you are". There is a major difference.

I realize that I have set myself up for others to scrutinize my writings, but "your" and "you're" is a simple enough correction to which adults ought to make.

Thank you

Brother Looney:

Truly, we all do make mistakes in writing that cannot be distinguished in speaking. I appreciate your calling attention to the one above. Another that I have noticed frequently is the wrong usage of "their" and "there" the former indicating possession and the latter indicating location. Big difference! Hopefully, no one will be offended at these simple, but desperately needful corrections. Since these are both legitimate words, spell check will not catch them.

Good points, brethren. We realize that we aren't writing dissertations or papers that will be graded by English teachers. Though this is a somewhat informal discussion forum, when we seek to communicate God's truth we ought to take care that it actually does communicate. The subject is important enough to expend the effort.

I speak not only to others, but also as one who wonders what he was thinking when he re-reads some things he has written. Perhaps we are a generation that depends too heavily on spell check, and not enough on personally editing our writings. I find as I get older there is often a disconnect somewhere between my brain and my fingers -- whether typing or writing. More & more, I find more & more errors.

May we all be considerate of our readers and write clearly and correctly to the best of our abilities.

The problem I probably face is not re-reading what I post. I type fairly quickly, so my typing matches my thoughts often times. This leaves room for typing exactly what I'm thinking (as you probably know) which may or may not be proper English. These words you've mentioned above would probably be very easily corrected if we just re-read our posts... or at least this is the case for me.
