Forum rules
The title of this forum has somewhat of a dual meaning - with regard to a 'general' versus 'specific' perspective. Generally speaking, History and Tradition have been the contributors of the distinctives of Baptist faith and practice. The topics in this forum should be about those specific things that have been contributors of the distinctives of Baptist faith and practice - based on History and Tradition. In other words, History and Tradition is the "category" and contributors of the distinctives of Baptist faith and practice is the "theme"... If the nature of the topic does not match this "category" and "theme", then it should not be placed in this forum.

Second London Baptist Confession compared to Westminster

Postby Rlvaughn on 2009 Apr 13 Mon 9:18 am

The Second London Baptist Confession of Faith, compiled in 1677 and revised in 1689, is an intriguing historical document. In it the Baptists chose to "copy" the Westminster Confession of the Presbyterians, and then rewrite parts where they differed.

The link below will take you to "A Tabular Comparison of the 1646 WCF and the 1689 LBCF". This comparison places the two confessions side by side, highlights in red "major" differences and in blue "minor" differences. The compiler freely admits that sometimes the line between 'major' and 'minor' differences is a fine one and may include subjective judgments. You might also want to know that the compiler is not a Baptist, but is in the Reformed tradition.

Such a comparison can be helpful in understanding the SLCF. The fact that they chose to copy the Westminster Confession speaks to one thing. The changes they made can clue us in to their thinking and how it differed from the Presbyterians in the areas where they made changes.

Hello Bro. Vaughn,

I tried to look at the websites and neither of them worked. Did I do something wrong?

Thanks for the info.

By some hook or crook several "%20" got added into the url. I have fixed that and it should work now. It wasn't anything you did wrong.

If anyone wants to print this, the PDF will print better than the html.
