Hebrew training

Postby Wesley Denney on 2008 Sep 16 Tue 5:54 pm

I was wondering if there was anyone that knew anything about www.classicalhebrew.com for teaching Biblical Hebrew online. The instructors are all in Israel and seem to have good qualifications. Could someone let me know if they have had any dealings with them or look at the site and tell me what you think.

bro. Denney,

I don't know anything about that site but it does look interesting. Are you thinking of taking some lessons? If so, get ready to have some fun with the gutterals.

I remember one funny incident in Hebrew class. We had bro. Travis Hubbard as our teacher, and he asked one of the students to read a verse from Genesis. The brother looked very perplexed as he was staring at his Hebrew Bible. Bro. Travis said, "Didn't you hear me? I said read that passage." The brother looked even more perplexed, and in a fit of frustration he exclaimed, "I can't read it! I just can't read it!"

Bro. Hubbard peered over at the student's Hebrew Bible, and replied, "Well turn your Bible right side up, dummy!"

How much does the program cost? You might be able to learn at a synagogue free, not sure. I lived in Israel for a number of years. We founded a Bible institute there for short term Baptists. I learned conversational Hebrew and how to read and write while living among the people. I love the language but do not use it now that I am here in the US at all.

I don't remember how much the course was but it was way out of my price range. I never thought about going to a synagogue. I will see if we have any in my area and ask. Guess it wouldn''t hurt to ask.
